Serego Alighieri
www.seregoalighieri.it
email: masi@masi.it
phone: +39 045 6832511
Serego Alighieri is a beautiful and historic wine estate in Gargagnago, just west of San Pietro in Cariano (where you can find a very well-staffed tourist information center). The Serego Alighieri estate, owned by the descendents of Dante, is a special place. The vines Dante’s son planted centuries ago (which were thankfully saved by phylloxera disease by their placement in the courtyard of the villa) are still used to make a limited bottling reserved for the family that has nurtured these vines for thousands of years.
Claudio, our english-speaking guide, took us for a walk through the grounds of the estate, the cellars, and the drying rooms. The estate also houses a cooking school with apartments on site. Call or email ahead of time to book a tour of the winery and estate followed by a tasting. Tastings are priced by flights and you are welcome to choose the wines you want to taste from a generous selection. We chose a flight of Amarone Classico and one white wine, a blend of Sauvignon Bianco and Garganega. Serego Alighieri is in partnership with Italian wine giant Masi, so you are able to taste wines from both producers in the wine shop. If you prefer just to taste, you may find their tasting room and wine shop open most weekdays, but you will have to announce yourself at the green gate to gain entrance to the estate.
Estate and Cellar tours by appointment.
English spoken.

phone: +39 045 7701266
Tommassi is located just off the wine road in Pedemonte di Valpolicella (Look for a sign on the right going north out of Pedemonte).
Tommasi is located in a residential/industrial neighborhood but they do have a small wine exhibit room and a tasting room for large and small groups. They prefer you call or email ahead, but they were able to accommodate us when we showed up unexpectedly with a quick taste of their Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico and Ca’ Florian single vineyard. We also tasted their Il Sestante Vigneto “Monte Masua” and the ’06 Fiorato Recioto Della Valpolicella, the region’s traditional sweet red wine.
English is spoken.
Tasting by Appointment is preferred.

Acacia wines have long been a favorite since I tasted my first Acacia Pinot Noir in 2003 at a resort outside of Washington, DC. Nicely extracted and velvety on the palate, I knew I had to visit this wine's birth place next time I was in California. Located in the Carneros appelation of the Napa Valley, Acacia's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes benefit from the cooler breezes from San Pablo bay and are hand picked at peak ripeness. Acacia is open for tastings daily or you may wish to join wine club members at the tasting events and barrel tastings which are open to the public but do require advance reservations. Open Monday though Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sundays 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm by appointment only.
Email for appointments or call one the above numbers if would you like to make an appointment less than 48 hours in advance. Tasting fees are waived for purchases of $25 or more.

Reynolds is a small family run winery that has become one of our favorite stops in Napa. As of 2009, their range consists of a Chardonnay, two Pinot Noirs (from the Russian River Valley and Los Carneros), a Merlot, the Estate Cabernet, a Reserve Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon and a red blend called “Persistence.”
We called ahead and reserved a table on the patio overlooking the duck pond and vineyard, and tasted the ’07 Napa Chardonnay, the ’07 Los Carneros Pinot, the ’05 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, the ’06 Stag’s Leap Merlot, and the ’05 Persistance while we nibbled on cheese and crusty bread. I have always been fond of the Estate cab and the ’05 vintage did not disappoint. It’s a beautiful wine in the glass with mocha on the nose and sour cherry, new oak and tobacco on the palate. However, Persistance, a blend of cab, cab franc, syrah, petite verdot, and merlot was my clear favorite that afternoon, with bright fruit and spice on the nose and on the finish and a lovely, velvety mouth feel.

Tucked in the north end of the Valley near the town of Calistoga, Storybook boasts of century old wine caves dug by the brothers Grimm, descendents of an old wine-making family from Germany, and coveted real estate for growing Zinfandel. The new occupants of the caves, Jerry and Sigrid Seps, bought the abandoned winery and surrounding land in 1976 and replanted Zinfandel, releasing their first wines in 1983 to much acclaim. Chateau St. Jean is another must do on the Sonoma Valley wine tour. Robert and I enjoy the reserve tasting which typically features the smaller production wines and their famed Cinq Cepages blend. Groups of eight or more can even create their own personal Cinq Cepages blend in the Cinq Cepages Blending Seminars offered by appointment.
The Chateau St. Jean wine shop and charcuterie is one of the best in the valley and is likely to be crowed on sunny weekends around lunch hour when people in the know stop by for their picnic lunch. Even with peak crowds during harvest, the tasting room hosts are courteous and helpful.

Ferrari-Carano is one of the most beautiful wineries in Sonoma Valley and also one of the most tourist friendly thanks to the spirit of hospitality instilled by owners Don and Rhonda Carano. Everyone from the tasting room hosts to the winemakers is eager to share tastings and knowledge with wine lovers from around the world.
Our pre-arranged private group tour included a vineyard tour, a winery and cellar tour, and a multi-course food pairing prepared by the in-house chef. During our winery tour, winemaker Sarah Quider tapped a pitcher of newly fermenting white grape juice for us to taste and then invited us to punch down a vat of pinot noir with our bare hands. It’s obvious that Sarah loves her job and loves sharing the wine making experience with fellow grape nuts.
Even if you just drop by for a tasting, you will be well advised to take some time to tour the garden which was designed by Rhonda Carano and flourishes year-round with seasonal plantings.
Tastings daily, at the Villa Fiore wine shop from 10 am – 5 pm without an appointment. As of 2009, visitors were invited to taste four wines for $5, which is refunded on a wine purchase of $25 or more.
Winery tours are by appointment only, Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m., based on availability.

The Foppiano family has been growing grape in the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County for over 100 years. They are known for their Petite Sirah, which has a been favorite of mine over many consistent vintages. They also produce a Sauvignon Blanc, a Rosé, and a Pinor Noir.
When we first tasted their Petitie Sirah, I was blown away by the unctuous ripe fruit and silky mouthfeel, and the very pleasing price. Very reasonable for such a quality wine. Foppiano offers free tastings unless you are a group of 10 or more then it's $5 a person, refundable with the purchase of a bottle of wine. I dare you to leave without a bottle in hand!

The $20 tasting includes a tasting of five wines as well as elegantly presented amuse-bouche (one bite appetizers) to pair with each wine.
